Piewatch – How are you today Rehyn?
Fantastic, Chipper… (But not annoyingly so)
Piewatch – You have already presented yourself to the world with your EP Time To Fly which generated good feedback and also secured you a chance to be financed on Slicethepie (all rather quickly), did you expect all this from it, or more/less?
I recorded the EP a little over a year ago now. It was my first attempt ever at recording something I had created myself and I really did not know what would happen. I have been seriously pursuing a musical career (for lack of a better term), about as long now and it has been an amazing adventure so far. I am a bit surprised at the overwhelming response I have received and at how quickly things have happened. I came into it with little expectations of anything more than sharing something I had made and having fun; I have not been disappointed in that regard and have been fortunate to have made some good strides along the way. It is really amazing how you make connections with people through the music and people really respond to something that came directly from your own life and experiences.
Piewatch – If/when you get financed on Slicethepie, how do you think your year will develop? What are your plans in this scenario?
I have a good set of songs right now I feel really strongly about. I am actively writing still at this point and I feel my songwriting has evolved in a lot of ways since the last EP. I feel more confident than ever in that respect and I have met some very talented people over the past year who can help expand upon the frame I build with the piano and my voice (some interesting instrumental artists!). I would have a busy year coming up, but I look forward to it. I have begun to interview producers and, of course, I would have to take time off from my night job as a superhero…
Piewatch – Which of your tracks are you most fond of and what does that track tell about you?
My favorite song is always the one I have just written or am currently. Of the songs on the EP though, I would say Wonderful Way, writing if, for no other reason, that it seems to connect with people some way above and beyond the others on the EP. I have had more fans write to me or approach me after a show to talk about that song than any other on the EP. It is hard to say exactly why…it is that 1 degree of something extra I guess that takes something to the next level. I think people have an easy time relating to having a person in their life who you love but who you have a hard time with for so long that they eventually just take you down with the ship. At the same time it has a resolute peace about it.
Piewatch – You write your own songs, where does the inspiration come from?
Almost always it comes from my own experiences. Sometimes I will write a tune from a third person objective, someone else’s experience that has moved me. If I don’t feel it though, I cannot write it. I would be hard pressed to write a cheesy love song (operative word is cheesy of course).
Piewatch – You surely enjoy live performances, but was that also the case with your first performance (startled or born to rock?)?
Live performance is my favorite aspect of this job next to recording (I LOVE working in the studio). For sure, born to rock. Occupation: Rock Star. Not that I don’t ever flub up or get nervous on stage, I can’t say my first performance was stellar. But as with anything you get better the more you do it!
Piewatch – You have also landed some interesting licensing deals care to elaborate some more?
Sure. I was approached by a producer who is responsible for handling the music for shows like The Real World, and other programs on MTV, Oxygen, and the E! networks (US, don’t know if those exist in the UK? Oxygen and E! are pretty major cable TV stations here). In any case, they were interested in licensing the entire EP for use on their programming. It is really exciting to know that something I wrote may be heard by millions of people.
Piewatch - If you could pick any TV show in which your music could serve as an opening, which one would it be and why?
I don’t watch hardly any tv, so I would rather have my music in a film. Best case scenario, some really neat independent film that gains a cult following for years to come.
Piewatch – Which are your 3 good and 3 bad characteristics?
You know that question is listed among the top 10 all-time toughest job interview questions? For good, I am compassionate, multi-talented, and generous. For bad I would say I am a perfectionist (when it comes to some things), I am generous too much so sometimes, and I am terrible at throwing a baseball…honest to God I failed gym in the 4th grade, who fails gym?
Piewatch – What about good and bad habits?
My good and bad habit is that I LOVE to eat. I love healthy foods mostly and I rarely eat fast food. But I love to cook and I can sit down and rival almost any hungry 200+ lb. man with a good ol’ burger, fries and beer.
Piewatch – If you or someone else could write a book about your life, what would the title of that book be and which genre would it suit most (and why)?
I have no idea; I suppose that is for some author to decide!
Piewatch – You are from Milwaukee; a city that was known as “beer capital of the world”. Are you within the spirits of that i.e. are you a “beer person”?
I am not only a beer person (and wine and anything else fun and good for the soul as such), I am a CHEESE person. Wisconsin is the “cheese state” you know.
Piewatch – Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, if you have anything to add please do.
Thank you for taking the time to interview. Thank you to everyone who has invested so far and anyone who plans to invest. I love to get emails from you so if you have any comments, questions, whatever, send it on over. Come see me play if you happen to be close enough, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to more adventure on the road ahead and more great music to come (whether it is from me or not).
